Cell phones make it easier for parents to keep tabs on teens. However, increasing problems over how they use their mobile make it necessary for parents to set up rules.

It is not an uncommon sight, teens at the mall gabbing with their friends on their phone or walking by with their thumbs flying as they rapidly text cryptic messages to each other. Cell phones have become a social life line for teens, and, in some ways, a relief for parents who have a way to keep in contact with their child 24/7.

The Danger of Mobile Phones

Despite their convenience, cell phones can pose a threat to teens' safety – physically, mentally, and emotionally. When placed in the hands of an adolescent without being accompanied with several words of wisdom, cell phones have been the root cause of both physical harm and horrific embarrassment to the child. Parents should consider laying several ground rules about how and when the cell phone should be used.

Driving Safely

The issue of the danger of driving while talking on the cell should not be unfamiliar to adolescents. However, the fact that they have heard it before does not mean that it does not bear repeating. It should be clear that if it is absolutely necessary to use a cell phone while driving, the driver should pull over to a safe parking spot before carrying on a conversation.

Cyber-Bullying

Unfortunately, cell phones have been used as a tool for bullying others. Teens should be aware that if they cannot use their cell to talk appropriately with their classmates, then they will not be using a cell phone at all. Teens should also be encouraged to inform their parents if they are the victim of cell phone bullies.

Camera Phones

Recently the media has peppered the public with cases of youth sharing completely inappropriate pictures taken from their cell phones. Parents may wish to consider skipping the camera phone feature for their teen, or be very specific with how the camera phone be used. Teens should also be instructed on what to do if they receive an inappropriate photograph as well.

Cell Phones and Privacy

For some youth, they may not think twice about giving out their cell phone number to new acquaintances. They need to be guided to understand who can receive their number and why it is important to safeguard their privacy. For one, it can result in exorbitant bills, and secondly it can pose a threat to their safety.

Cheating with Cell Phones

Parents may be less aware that teens might attempt to use their cell phones as a tool to cheat on exams. Answers might be easily given out or received through texting features. Students should realize that whatever the method, cheating is unacceptable and will be dealt with accordingly.

Perhaps what underscores all of these guidelines is the importance of the parent as a role model. If parents want their child to use cell phones safely and responsibly, they better be sure that they are too.
